Workshop Overview

During this two day workshop participants will explore beliefs and practices that nurture young writers in inquiry-based classrooms. Over the two days, authentic writing samples and video clips will be used to see and practice strategies for supporting writers in Preschool through Grade 5 classrooms.

Day 1 AM: Key Beliefs for Young Writers

Exploring key concepts and beliefs that support the development of young writers. These ideas include:

  • Honoring Approximations and Nudging Development
  • Vision: The Role of Mentor Texts
  • The Use of Mentor Texts in Mini Lessons, Conferring, and Designing Units of Study
  • The Importance of Choice: Topic and Genre
  • Reading Like a Writer

Day 1 PM: Essential Elements for a Balanced Writing Program – Part 1

In the afternoon, we will build on these key beliefs by layering on the practices and supports included in a writing workshop. We will explore the structure and use of:

  • Craft
  • Process
  • Conventions, Mechanics, Readability
  • Genre-Based Units

By the end of the first day we had established the important structures of writing workshop that are built on fundamental principles of teaching writing.

Day 2 AM: Essential Elements for a Balanced Writing Program – Part 2

In the morning of Day 2 we will look at more practices and supports included in a writing workshop. We will explore the structure and use of:

  • Identity, Habits and Behaviors
  • Response to Writing
  • Social Network & Support
  • Writing Projects

Day 2 PM: Exploring Exemplar Writing Units for Young Writers

In the afternoon of Day 2 we will focus on a process for projecting units of study. Participants will engage in the process of designing a unit by:

  • Studying a stack of mentor texts
  • Determining teaching possibilities from their own process
  • Determining Primary and Secondary goals
  • Projecting possible mini lesson topics

Matt Glover’s Biography

Matt Glover is a full time educational consultant and coauthor with Kathy Collins of I Am Reading. He is the author of the Heinemann title Engaging Young Writers, coauthor with Mary Alice Berry of Projecting Possibilities for Writers, and coauthor with Katie Wood Ray of Already Ready and Watch Katie and Matt…Sit Down and Teach Up, a video enhanced ebook that combines video and text to examine conferring with young writers. A nationally known literacy consultant, Matt is a frequent presenter at conferences and in school districts on topics related to nurturing writers and supporting children’s intellectual growth and development. Matt has been an educator for over 20 years, including 12 years as the principal and instruc­tional leader of Creekside Early Childhood School. Matt lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his wife and four children.
